The idea of Spirits seems to prevalent across all cultures and religious traditions which may lend support to the idea as it is difficult to dismiss wholesale something so prevalent. Jins are very prevalent from what I know about Islam. Christianity has devils. In all honesty I do not know that they exist in Judaism, my own religion except to the extent that the New Testament assumes casting out devils was normative in the first century. Frankly when I visited Indian remains in the desert out west I found it somewhat implausible that they dug little holes for spirits to escape from the earth and that there is nothing to that. For that matter I am not sure that every witch doctor mask does not have some spiritual reality behind it. For my part as a Jewish kid I saw a demon on me once and it chilled me to the bone. Ultimately it changed my music listening habits as well. A friend of mine who is essentially an atheist and was president of our high school class had a demon follow him for a while and it nearly destroyed him. I am told he has become very successful in the corporate world and never suffered from any psychotic disorder that I know of.
